Marian College PTA Quiz Night - Sunday 3 August, arrive 5pm for a 6pm start, Cranford Alehouse, 305 Cranford St

Get your thinking caps on and gather your team for our upcoming PTA Quiz Night - an evening of trivia, laughter and community spirit, all in support of a great cause!  The Marian College PTA are raising funds for us to purchase a new portable stage for our school, giving students a space to shine in performance, assemblies, and more.  Every ticket sold brings us closer to making this exciting project a reality.

Tickets are $20 per person, $120 for a table of six and can be purchased here.

The PTA will also be running a raffle to support this fundraising cause.  A reminder that an email was sent to all families with specific requests of what each Wā Whānau group bring to contribute towards this.

A reminder also, for you to complete the form that has been emailed to you seeking sponsorship and support for our PTA.  We are creating a database of supporters for one-off and ongoing PTA initiatives and would love to know how you can help.

Marian College Board Elections

It’s School Board Election Time!  Be Part of Something Big!

Every three years, all state and state-integrated schools elect their Boards - and that time is now!  The School Board plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our kura.  From setting the strategic direction, consulting with our community, ensuring funding is used wisely, to upholding the values of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the board’s mahi has a real impact on every student’s journey.  At Marian College, our board includes:

4 x Proprietor’s representatives (appointed by the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch)

5 x Community representatives

The Principal

1 x staff representative (elected by staff)

1 x student representative (elected by students)

Now’s your chance to be part of this team!

Nominations for community representatives are officially OPEN, and you should have received info from Election Pilot on how to nominate.  Whether you're keen to throw your hat in the ring or want to nominate someone who would bring great insight and energy to the board - don’t miss this opportunity!

Curious but not quite sure what it’s all about?  Kōrari sessions are a great way to learn more, ask questions, and find out what being a board member really involves.  Click here for more information.

Check out the Community Member Guide to School Boards to explore the role in more detail.

Year 10 Literacy and Numeracy Assessments

Year 10 students will sit their literacy and numeracy assessments in Week 8 of this term. This is the first opportunity for students to sit these assessments, improve their skills, and gain credits towards their qualifications. Students who do not pass the tests will have further opportunities to gain the literacy and numeracy requirements of NCEA next year in 2026. There are no further opportunities to sit the assessments this year, and derived grades are not available. This means that attendance is very important.

Click here to view the requirements for NCEA.

Click here to view the Timetable.

Note that students will sit their assessments in the same classroom each morning for the first two periods of the day. It is vitally important that students are on time, and bring all the resources listed below. Students also need to go to the toilet before the assessment begins.

Students must bring:

  • Charged laptop, and the charger
  • Headphones
  • Scientific calculator, NOT a graphics calculator (for the numeracy assessment)
  • A pen and a ruler (for the numeracy assessment, paper will be supplied)
  • NZQA login and password (students will be given these at a student briefing in week 4)
  • A book to read when finished

CathConnect Update

By now you will have received an invoice for 2025 Attendance Dues from the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch.  This invoice is to be paid directly to the Diocese for Attendance Dues only and can be paid in instalments up to 31 December 2025.

Please keep paying your Marian College school account for course and take-home materials costs.  If you have any concerns or questions on what is owing on your Marian College account, please contact Mrs Sharon Moody, sharonm@mariancollege.school.nz.

Notification of Appointments During School Time

If your daughter needs to leave during the school day for an appointment, you must notify us in advance to avoid any delays in your daughter signing out.  We cannot let a student leave for any reason during the day without prior parental permission, preferably in writing.  You can notify us via the school app (search Marian College on the app store) or by emailing attendance@mariancollege.school.nz.

Absences

If your daughter is going to be away on planned leave during term time, please let us know in writing at least two weeks prior by emailing  attendance@mariancollege.school.nz.  Please include your daughter's name, the dates of the absence, and the reason for the absence.

Once your leave request has been assessed, we will confirm to you in writing whether your leave request will be recorded as 'justified' or 'unjustified'.

Holidays during term time are discouraged and are considered an unjustified absence.  For unjustified absences, there is no requirement for teachers to provide work to the student in their absence or to provide extra tuition to the student on their return, and teachers are not able to give extensions or alternative deadlines for assessments.

Medications

The school office holds a supply of paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets, which students can purchase for 50c per tablet.  Students are welcome to carry their own personal supply if they wish.

We also hold a small amount of antihistamine tablets, which may be purchased for $1 per tablet, which we will only dispense in certain circumstances after seeking parent approval.  If your daughter suffers from hay fever or is a regular user of antihistamines, please ensure she has her own supply available or she takes them at home before coming to school.

We do not supply cough and cold medicine, strepsils, and the like.  If your daughter is sick with symptoms that can be passed on, please keep her at home.

If your daughter uses an asthma inhaler or an EpiPen, please ensure that she has this available on her at all times.

We are happy to hold medications in the school office on behalf of your daughter if you need us to (short or long term)

Marian College Uniform

There is a need for secondhand Marian College uniform items.  If you have any spare or no longer needed uniform items at home, especially kilts and cardigans, these would be gratefully received by the College.  You are invited to donate them, or we can sell them on your behalf.  Please have them drycleaned and in a tidy condition before dropping them into the school office.
