Our first priority is to develop strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, supported by a structured literacy approach and targeted acceleration programmes in both mathematics and literacy where required. Learning follows a clear scope and sequence, with next steps taught through small, explicit teaching groups. A strong focus is placed on learner agency and self-management, empowering students to take ownership of their learning.
We place a strong emphasis on holistic education, where academic, social, and physical development are equally valued. Fitness and physical activity are encouraged daily through fitness sessions, alongside a wide range of arts experiences including kapa haka on our outdoor stage, weekly visual art, music and singing, and drama integrated into literacy. We value play as an essential part of childhood, supporting creativity, wellbeing, and social development. We encourage children to join local clubs to further explore sports and interests in their community, while cooperative games at school build social skills, teamwork, and positive relationships.
We are a proud Enviroschool and part of the Garden to Table programme, with ongoing projects in our gardens and school grounds that promote sustainability, environmental stewardship, and hands-on learning. Education outside the classroom is a vital part of our programme, including regular local excursions, whole-school camps, and term-based studies that use our unique local environment as a living classroom—such as learning focused on “The Inlet.” We make the most of our beautiful surroundings to bring learning to life.
Our school culture is grounded in our values of manaakitaka and manawanui, which guide how we learn, teach, and relate to one another. Across the school, students also learn te reo Māori from Year 1, strengthening their connection to Te Ao Māori and place.
We offer a transition-to-school programme and a playgroup for parents and whānau who are interested in joining us on Monday and Tuesday mornings. We are fortunate to have a highly qualified Early childhood teacher working with us in a dual role as kaiawhina and playgroup co-ordinator. This helps tamariki and their families build early connections with our school, staff, and community, ensuring children feel a strong sense of belonging and confidence before they even start school.
Our Year 7 and 8 programme includes a strong focus on leadership, with rich learning opportunities designed to extend and accelerate learners and support their growth and transition to secondary education.
As teachers, we take great care to know each child and their whānau well. With small class sizes, we are able to provide highly personalised support and a deep understanding of each learner’s strengths, needs, and interests. We are committed to going the extra mile for every child, ensuring they feel supported, challenged, and valued. We are proud to offer an education that is hands-on, inclusive, and inspiring, and we believe Pūrākaunui School provides one of the very best primary education experiences available.
