THE RIPPLE EFFECT AWARD
Ripple Effect Award - Te Puru School Rip Rugby team
Te Puru School’s Rip Rugby team has collected one of the newest and most prestigious prizes at the Zespri AIMS Games, winning the Ripple Effect Award for their incredible commitment to integrity, sportsmanship, and the spirit of fair play during the week-long tournament.
The Ripple Effect Award was signed by Olympic champion and Zespri ambassador Lisa Carrington at the tournament's opening ceremony, and Te Puru School team - based on the scenic Thames Coast - received multiple nominations during the week for the way they handled themselves.
Opening their match with a powerful haka, according to one nomination, they set the tone for a game filled with grit and grace. In a beautiful gesture of respect, they recognised a player from the opposing team with an award that reflected their own school value of perseverance. As one observer put it, “Te Puru School truly epitomised the values of integrity, sportsmanship, and fun challenge on the field today.”
Their coach was described as “an absolute legend,” and the team’s invitation to join them for a combined photo captured the inclusive and uplifting energy they brought to the tournament.
Not only did Te Paru School embody everything the Ripple Effect Award stands for during the Zespri AIMS Games, but even before the tournament began, they had already proven themselves as champions, fundraising by cleaning up nearly 8km of coastline between Thames and Te Puru. It embodied their values of kaitiakitanga and showing a deep connection to their environment and community.
Having dedication both on and off the field is what truly makes them deserving of this honour. Ka pai, Te Puru School - you’ve truly brought the Ripple Effect to life!
The Ripple Effect Award celebrates the team that makes waves — not just through performance, but through positivity, spirit, and connection. Win or lose, it’s about showing up with heart, uplifting others, and creating a ripple of good vibes that spreads across the entire Zespri AIMS Games tournament week.
The trophy will be open for nominations and awarded to the team whose energy and attitude inspire others — on the field, in the stands, and everywhere in between. Whether it’s cheering for competitors, supporting teammates, or simply bringing joy to the sidelines, the successful team will be the one who leaves a lasting impression.
The award is symbolised by a paddle donated by Dame Lisa Carrington, New Zealand’s most successful Olympian, who knows the power of rhythm, routine, and resilience. Her legacy of excellence is reflected in this award, which will be passed on year after year to the team that best embodies the spirit of the Games.
And the ripple doesn’t stop there — the winning team will also receive a $500 Sports Distributors voucher for their school, helping to support future participation in sport. It’s an award that keeps giving, creating its own ripple effect long after the tournament ends.
Nominations can be made via the Zespri AIMS Games app and will close at 8:00PM, Thursday 4th September 2025.
