August 2025: Please note that changes have only been made to Chapter 3; other changes will be made once the NZPCA Constitutions are ratified
We’ve made important updates to our rules and regulations for the new season, including clarity on member age eligibility, helmet and stirrup requirements, the use of body cameras, and new dressage and eventing provisions.
Highlights include:
Riding member eligibility now extends until the end of the season in which you turn 25.
Both peaked and un-peaked helmets allowed for Mounted Games.
New safety rules for stirrups: Magnetic stirrups are banned.
Body cameras are prohibited at all NZPCA activities.
Clearer dressage warm-up definitions.
Updated eventing dangerous riding rules and introduction of a No Time class trial.
Jumping updates: We follow ESNZ Discipline Rules - if they update, our rules for events also follow suite.
Article 210 – Spread Obstacle: This rule has been removed (effective 1 August 2025). Safety cups must be used for the back poles of spread obstacles and triple-bars, and when poles are placed over a water jump. These must also be used in the exercise area.
Article 243 - Abuse of Horses
2.2. Excessive use of the whip
i. The whip may not be used to vent an Athlete’s temper. Such use is always excessive ii. iii. The use of a whip on a Horse’s head is always excessive use The whip should never be used more than three times in total, in the competition arena or in the practice arena. If a Horse’s skin is broken, it is always considered excessive use of the whip iv. The whip is not to be used after Elimination; An Athlete identified as misusing or excessively using the whip will be disqualified and may be fined at the discretion of the Ground Jury. 2.3. Excessive Use of the hand/bit i. The hand or bit must not be used to vent an Athlete’s temper. Such use is always excessive. 38 ii. The bit is not to be used in such a way that it is a punishment following a misdemeanor or elimination.
