New Zealand Pony Club - Regulations and Rules

August 2025: Please note that changes have only been made to Chapter 3; other changes will be made once the NZPCA Constitutions are ratified

We’ve made important updates to our rules and regulations for the new season, including clarity on member age eligibility, helmet and stirrup requirements, the use of body cameras, and new dressage and eventing provisions.

Highlights include:

  • Riding member eligibility now extends until the end of the season in which you turn 25.

  • Both peaked and un-peaked helmets allowed for Mounted Games.

  • New safety rules for stirrups: Magnetic stirrups are banned.

  • Body cameras are prohibited at all NZPCA activities.

  • Clearer dressage warm-up definitions.

  • Updated eventing dangerous riding rules and introduction of a No Time class trial.

  • Jumping updates:

  • Article 210 – Spread Obstacle: This rule has been removed (effective 1 August 2025). Safety cups must be used for the back poles of spread obstacles and triple-bars, and when poles are placed over a water jump. These must also be used in the exercise area.

  • Article 243 – Abuse of Horses (2.2 Excessive Use of the Whip):

    • Whips may not be used to vent an athlete’s temper.

    • Use of a whip on a horse’s head is always excessive.

    • A horse should never be hit more than three times in total behind the saddle, in the competition or practice arena.

    • If a horse’s skin is broken, it is always excessive use of the whip.

    • Whips must not be used after elimination; misuse may result in disqualification and a fine at the discretion of the Ground Jury.
