NZPCA’s national insurance policy provides General Liability cover for activities run under the NZPCA umbrella.
It also covers national-level assets, such as trophies and digital equipment.
This insurance applies to sanctioned Area, Club, and Branch events and activities where all NZPCA regulations are being followed.
What is not covered:
Assets owned locally (such as buildings, land, jumps, and equipment held by an Area, Club, or Branch) are not covered. These must be insured separately by the legal entity that owns them.
The policy does not cover casual or informal use of grounds or facilities, including use by members, non-members, or coaches operating independently.
Private lessons, clinics, or other non-NZPCA activities held on club grounds are not covered.
Important reminders:
NZPCA insurance only applies when all NZPCA regulations are strictly followed, including General Regulations and Membership Regulations.
If Casual Members are involved in an event, they must complete the appropriate form for cover to apply.
Riding and Adult Members
A current financial member, registered on the National Database, with your National Levy paid via Nominate; or
A Casual Member, with the correct form completed specifically for that event.
⚠️ Important: If a rider, adult, or guardian is not a current financial member and has not completed a Casual Membership form, they are not covered by NZPCA insurance.
For example, if your horse damages a car at a rally and you are not a current member, you may be personally responsible for the costs.
Coaches
You’re insured if you are:
A financial coach member (registered on the National Database and levy paid via Nominate), or
You’re not covered. For example, if a horse you’re coaching damages a vehicle, you may be personally liable.

Covered under NZPCA insurance
These activities are covered when they are formally organised, published, and run as official NZPCA events.
• A scheduled rally run by the Club, Branch, or Area• An official practice day or training day organised and advertised by Pony Club• A discipline training day, for example Timberlands training, run as an official Pony Club event• A competition, event, or organised activity run under NZPCA rules• Training held at an external venue where the session is organised and delivered as an NZPCA event• Activities where
The event is organised and approved by the Club, Branch, or Area
NZPCA General Regulations are followed
Required medical provision is in place
Fees are limited to cost recovery and the activity is clearly a Pony Club training or rally
Not covered under NZPCA insurance
These activities fall outside NZPCA cover.
• Private lessons arranged by individual riders• Riders bringing their own instructor for private coaching• Clinics or coaching that are not organised and run as an NZPCA event• Riders training independently at a venue, even if other Pony Club riders are present• Informal or casual schooling sessions• Opening Club or private grounds for riders to come and ride at their own discretion• Unstructured “come and use the grounds” sessions• Any activity that is not published and managed as an official NZPCA event• Non NZPCA commercial or private activities held on Club or private land
Timberlands or squad example
Covered• A published Timberlands training rally organised by the Club• For Pony Club riders in the programme• With an appointed coach• With NZPCA medical standards in place
Not covered• Individual riders booking their own Timberlands coaching• Riders bringing private instructors• Additional riders joining outside the organised Pony Club group
Important
• Insurance applies only to structured NZPCA events, not to informal or ad hoc activities• There are no dispensations outside the policy• In the event of a serious incident, liability may be determined by insurers, not individuals• Clubs should consider their own public liability insurance if grounds are made available for casual or non NZPCA use
