Ensuring the safety of riders and horses begins with well-maintained, correctly fitted gear. At the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA), we prioritise safety at every level of riding.
Our Gear Safety Checklists are designed to support coaches, officials, riders, and caregivers in recognising and addressing gear-related risks before they lead to injury or equipment failure.
Faulty, ill-fitting, or inappropriate gear is a leading contributor to preventable incidents in equestrian sport. Tack failure can result in falls, injuries, or harm to horses, and it often occurs due to wear and tear, poor maintenance, or improper use. By implementing routine gear checks using consistent checklists, we promote a culture of safety and responsibility across all Pony Club activities.
These checklists:
Provide a standardised approach to assessing gear safety and fit
Help riders learn best practices for equipment care
Support volunteers and coaches in identifying unsafe gear
Reduce the risk of avoidable accidents during rallies, training, and events
Gear checks are a proactive step in creating a safe environment for learning and riding, and are a fundamental part of NZPCA’s commitment to welfare and safety for both horse and rider.
