Concussion

NZPCA Concussion Statement and Procedure – Introduction

At the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA), rider safety and wellbeing are paramount. Concussion, particularly from falls, is one of the most significant risks in equestrian sport. With increasing national awareness of sport-related concussion and the serious short- and long-term effects it can have, NZPCA is committed to providing clear, practical guidelines to support safe practices at all levels.

Each year, ACC receives hundreds of horse-riding-related head injury claims—many of which involve falls. However, it's estimated that up to half of all concussions go unreported. Our goal is to ensure that every head knock is taken seriously, recognised promptly, and managed appropriately.

This resource outlines:

  • What a concussion is and how it presents

  • The short and long-term consequences of concussion

  • The NZPCA’s recognition and response procedure using the 4 Rs: Recognise, Resuscitate, Remove, Replace

  • Responsibilities for coaches, convenors, and riders

  • The mandatory stand-down period and clearance process following suspected concussion

By following this procedure, we aim to minimise risk, safeguard our members, and promote a culture of safety and awareness throughout Pony Club activities.
