Rowing

We have built a strong and successful rowing squad over recent years,
and we’re excited to continue growing the programme. We’re always on the lookout for enthusiastic new rowers and coxswains to join the team - both for this season and beyond.

Why row:

Rowing is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and rewarding sports - a chance to challenge yourself, build confidence, and be part of something truly special. It’s a sport that strengthens both body and mind, developing fitness, discipline, teamwork, and resilience in a supportive and motivating environment.

As part of the rowing community, students form lifelong friendships and learn the value of commitment, leadership, and perseverance. Whether it’s the thrill of early-morning training on calm water or the pride of competing alongside your crew, rowing offers unforgettable experiences and personal growth that go far beyond the boat.

Rowing can also open doors to exciting opportunities, including university pathways and scholarships, and connections across New Zealand’s wider sporting network.

Getting started:

Rowing is ideally suited to students in Year 9 and above, though enthusiastic Year 8 students are welcome join Learn to Row sessions in preparation for competitive racing from Year 9.

Club rowing:

ACG Tauranga is affiliated with the Bay Coast Rowing Club (BOPCRC), based on the Wairoa River and all our rowers are members of BOPCRC.

The club oversees all requirements for participation and competition, with support provided by the ACG Tauranga Sports Department as needed.

For more detailed guidance, BOPCRC provides handbooks for both Returning and Novice Rowers. These handbooks outline information such as key dates, training requirements, and selection criteria.

Training and Competition:

Rowers train regularly throughout the week, both on and off water during the rowing season, building toward a series of summer regattas. They compete in both club and school-level regattas, with the goal of performing strongly at major events such as the North Island Secondary School and the New Zealand Secondary School Regattas.

Maadi Cup:

The Maadi Cup is the pinnacle event on the secondary school rowing calendar and the largest school sporting event in New Zealand. It attracts national attention, including televised coverage.  Students at ACG Tauranga have proudly and successfully represented the school at this prestigious regatta.

School crew selection and further information:

As rowing is a specialist sport, ACG Tauranga relies on the expertise and support of BOPCRC coaches for team selection for school regattas.  Accordingly, we follow and support the coaching processes and selection criteria as outlined and communicated in the BOPCRC Handbook(s), however, we will ensure selections are made with fairness and transparency, based on performance, commitment, and the criteria outlined by BOPCRC.
